InteriorDoor-main_FullFirst of all you might want to determine if the entire jamb and door
needs to be replaced or just the actual slab. Then you must determine the size of the door. Measuring just the slab of the door from side to side will give you an accurate measurement. Most interior doors are all the same height, eighty inches.now that you have the size you need to determine which hand the door will be by standing with your back up against the hinge side of the door jamb. If the door opens to the right it’s a right handed door. If the door opens to the left it’s a left handed door.

Now that we know what size door to get.If you just want to replace the door slab. Remove the existing slab by taking the hinge pins out first.Knock them out with a screwdriver and hammer. Remove the hinges from the slab with a screw gun or screwdriver. Lay the new slab on top of the old one to transfer the hinge alignment. Use a square and a pencil to transfer lines. Place the hinge on the new slab in between your pencil lines making sure you have the hinge on the door properly and trace the hinge. You can use a mortise tool or you also may do it the old fashioned way of using a hammer and chisel to mortise the hinge joint. Finish all three mortise joints and replace the hinges.Hang door with pins.

If you plan on replacing the entire door and jamb. You must measure the door the same way and purchase the door already in it’s jamb. Carefully remove the trim around the door with a pry bar or putty knife trying not to crack or break trim. Remove caulk first if present with a razor knife.

After trim is removed on both sides of the door cut the door out of the opening with a sawzall. Just cut where the nails are as to do as little damage as possible.Or you can pry the old jamb out of the opening. Once the opening is cleaned insert the new door and jamb together into the opening. Spacing the jamb in the opening evenly to ensure that the trim works. Using shims level the hinge side of the door in both directions and nail hinge side to opening. Checking for level and plumb after you pin it in place. Close the door in the opening and check the reveal around the door to make sure it looks square. Once door is square finish nailing it in.

Cut the shims off with a utility knife. Replace door trim and set any nails that need be.Fill nail holes with lightweight spackling compound. Caulk around door trim. Now your ready to paint.
